Blog #5

Hamlet is upset for many reasons. Hamlet is angry and searching for revenge. He became very disturbed when he came to find out about his fathers death. He could not come to terms with it and he could not come out of the grief of his fathers death. His fathers death was a big shock to him and affected him a great deal. He was also upset at his mother and how quickly she became remarried, he could not accept that his mother married his uncle which further increases his problems and sadness."Like Niobe, all tears;- why she, even she,- O God, a beast that wants discourse of reason,Would have mourned longer,-married with my uncle, My father’s brother; but no more like my father Than I to Hercules: within a month; Ere yet the salt of most unrighteous tearsHad left the flushing in her galled eyes, She married. O most wicked speed, to post With such dexterity to incestuous sheets It is not, nor it cannot come to good, But break my heart,- for I must hold my tongue." (Act 1 Scene 2 Lines 149-158) This quote is very significant because it describes the causes of Hamlet's pain, how much he is unhappy with the intense disgust at his mother’s marriage. It broke his heart to know of his mothers new marriage.

  1. I agree that Hamlet is disgusted with his mother and struggles with his feelings, and thought that the quote you chose supported your thoughts nicely. He wants revenge from his uncle because his mom did break his heart, and yet he doesn't murder his uncle. There is a constant struggle within him throughout the second act. I believe he wants to avenge his father's death, but he doesn't because the logical side of him needs more evidence to show that his father was murdered. He doesn't fully believe the ghost because he feels as though it might be the devil luring him to commit a sin.

  2. I also agree that Hamlet was very angry and overwhelmed with sadness when he learned about his father’s death. When he found out that his mother had wed her father’s brother, Claudius, he felt betrayed and disgusted by his mother and uncle’s actions. He feels that his mother had moved on too quickly and has not mourned her husband’s death. When the ghost appears and reveals to him that Claudius is the one who murdered his father, he vows to seek revenge on his father’s murderer.

  3. Great post! I also agree with the way Hamlet is feeling towards his mother of remarrying. I really liked the quote that you used to describe his feelings towards her. I found a similar quote where he is calling her a villain for remarrying. It was a short time for someone to lose their loved one and then to all of a sudden remarry was a shock to him. And the fact that it was his uncle just made the situation worse because that was considered incest. Since his uncle took the throne, he was furious and the fact that his uncle killed his dad was the worst and Hamlet was determined to seek revenge.

  4. Amanda,
great blog i also agree with you.
When hamlet returns home he finds out his mother married his uncle and finds out his father was murdered later on he hears theirs a ghost that looks like his father but does not believe it till he sees it with his own eyes. I believe that hamlet is not strong enough to avenge his uncles murder

  5. His fathers death definately affected him a great deal. i also thought the quote about holding his tongue is very significant to what has driven him to his current mindset. Thinking about it, his weak emotional state reflects how he would handle the position of power if his uncle had not replaced his father. Maybe his mother intially allowed power to his uncle because she knew he was weak and not fit to lead. It is just an idea because through examinaing Hamlet i don't think he would be such a great leader. I think so because through comparison of Fortinbras, Hamlet seems immensely inferior.

  6. Great Job Amanda -- I am in total agreement with your paragraph and loved the quote you pulled in. Hamlet was a scholar not even a guard or a worrier at all. He had just come from school and needed to grieve with his mother but couldn't because she already married someone else. That would make anyone go mad huh? Also I agree with Joseph, there is no way Hamlet is ready to be a great leader he could not have stepped in at that time as the leader of Denmark.
